The Korea International Pharmaceutical Industry Association (KRPIA) has developed a vaccine in a surprisingly short time of one year since the COVID hit the world. The KRPIA said seven vaccines have been fully approved for use worldwide. According to the COVID-19 vaccine and treatment status of the U.S. Pharmaceutical Association, a total of nine vaccines and treatments have been approved for emergency use and licensed in the U.S., 81 global vaccines and 544 global treatments are currently being tested, with a total of 1,613 clinical trials.COVID-19 vaccine development2-1) Pfizer and German co-developed vaccine BioNTech.Starting with the U.K., which announced the world's first approval for use onDecember 2, 2020, it received emergency approval from the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) on December 11. • One-Person Media Content, VlogBy Kim Ji-su Cub Reporter, Sophomore of JapaneseWith the development and utilization of communication technology more media is being created. Not only professionals, but also non-professionals can create, edit, and share videos with ease. Within all of this media output, vlogs have gained great popularity. Lets examine what a vlog is and its impact. The word vlog is a compound word of video and blog. Vlogs are a type of video content that involves filming ones daily life to share online. Vloggers mainly use YouTube, where everyone can easily upload and watch videos.Recording ones daily life with these videos and communicating with friends has become a trend for Generation Z and Millennials, and interest in vlogging, a new content field, is increasing. According to the YouTube keyword tool, as of February 2019, the number of vlog searches increased about 16 times from 60,000 to 1.09 million in six months. This shows that the demand for vlog-type content has exploded within a short period of time. This chart shows changes in the use of single-person media content compared to last year, as surveyed by Mezzo Media in 2019. As you can see in this table, it shows an increase of about 55 percent over last year. There are several reasons for the increased use of vlogs. First of all, simplifications in editing technology have lowered the psychological entry barrier for content production. Many general vloggers produce videos with smartphones rather than using professional shooting equipment, and viewers are well aware that they can also easily create their own content. Because of this, the people who post vlogs as a hobby are gaining as much popularity as professional YouTubers. In addition, the majority of their viewers are in the 2030 generation, referred to as the Z generation or the millennial generation. These generations, as distinguished from older generations, are accustomed to recording their daily life through video. As a generation exposed to the digital environment since childhood, these generations enjoy active communication with acquaintances through mobile video, and are more willing to share their lives with the viewing public.Next, lets look at the characteristics of vlogs.Consumers become creatorsOnline video platforms are attracting users and allowing them to watch their favorite types of content anytime, anywhere, without constraints. In the past, traditional media were used, such as television, and content was consumed in a relatively passive position. Where two-way communication is possible, now it means that the viewer can also be a producer in the smart media era. No longer are we limited to the group of experts in the traditional media, but viewership can extend to individual creators as well.Interactive communication is possibleIn that communication that transcends time and space can provide a place for interaction with different interest groups, so more meaningful exchange is now possible. One-person media satisfies consumers desire for participation through intimate two-way communication between creators and viewers, and this reflects itself in videos, providing an emotional bond that was difficult to obtain in legacy media. Creators create the videos they want to make. Their viewers watch the desired content from the creator and can give feedback. Based on this received feedback, creators can make more videos that respond directly to their audience.Creative content becomes profitableAs the consumption of one-person media content has increased rapidly and the market expands, a new profit structure has been created. Creators can earn substantial profits from advertisements for content they create based on viewers support. In addition to these profits, it is possible to more easily challenge the traditional media content field. In fact, these days, personal media content may also be considered when applying for professional positions. They can serve as personal advertising for your range of talents. When you come into contact with vlog content, it doesnt feel very difficult or challenging. Content topics can include eating, childcare, beauty, and games, images of peoples ordinary daily lives, such as their commuting, talking with friends, and traveling. Turn your own memories into content, and if you can even make some money, what could be better than this? I really really recommend you try vlogging, a one-person media content.

  • Feeling Blue? COVID BluesBy Jeong Hyo-bin Reporter, Junior of Chemical and Biological EngineeringAs COVID-19 is having a prolonged presence, there have been many changes to our daily lives. We have become more fearful of infection by COVID-19. Because of the social distancing policy, to prevent community infection, we cant attend occasions or meetings that are crowded with people. As the constraints of everyday life grow, we cant live like before COVID-19, and many people feel blue. This situation is called the COVID-19 blues.COVID-19 blues is a neologism combining COVID-19 and blues which means depression. In a sudden disaster like COVID-19, there are many cases where people become restless, fearful, and suffer mental shock. Examples of COVID-19 blues include feeling dullness caused by staying indoors while refraining from outdoor activities, anxiety that they might be infected with COVID-19, feeling lethargy as activity restrictions continue, and excessive obsession with infectious disease-related information and news.In early 2020, when COVID-19 began to spread in Korea, people were obsessed with home-based activities, such as making dalgona coffee by stirring it 4,000 times and souffles made by stirring over 10,000 times. Its normally a hassle to stir anything 4,000 to 10,000 times, but many people tried to relieve their frustration because they couldnt go out and had to find small fun inside. As the restrictions on activities continued, due to the prolonged COVID-19 spread, the government held a contest to find new ideas for people to do in their homes. The contest was called Jeuljipso, which means our joyful stay home game. It was a contest in which people of all ages could participate to overcome the dullness. To prevent and survive COVID-19 blues, it is most important to maintain the rhythm of life, such as regular sleep and wake-up times. By following the rules of hygiene (handwashing, wearing masks, etc.), we can lower our concerns about infection. If you are concerned about infection, it is effective to be immersed in everyday life to forget the anxiety. By asking people around you how they are doing, it is possible to immerse yourself in daily life. Also, during a pandemic, it is so common to feel anxiety. Therefore, release the idea that anxiety should be eliminated quickly and accept it as it is, you will feel more comfortable. It is helpful to relieve anxiety by following recommendations and information from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) without being misled by exaggerated information. We can overcome our lethargy with light exercise rather than stopping all activity. Outdoor activities are less likely to be places where COVID-19 can spread. Short walks at midnight or going on a drive are good examples of ways to keep active. Also, we can do exercise by watching home training videos, do squats 30 times, cook new dishes, and water plants. Setting and practicing simple goals lets us feel fulfillment and is a good solution to overcome lethargy.Currently, public health centers, mental health welfare centers, and local governments are consulting on Corona Blue nationwide under the name of Integrated Psychological Support Group. There are supporting psychological prevention of epidemics services, consultations, and psychological cure services. In addition, many companies are creating opportunities for consultation, and local governments are allowing citizens to enjoy cultural life while maintaining social distancing, such as running drive-in theaters. In order to minimize prejudice and disgust of confirmed cases, the government should also organize campaigns to inform the public that they dont need to avoid or ostracize those who have recovered from the infection. As COVID-19 continues, people may also suffer COVID-19 red, a feeling of anger beyond melancholy, and COVID-19 black which is beyond the melancholy level into a gloomy situation. Lets not just think that its hard to stay at home, but that its an opportunity to spend more time with your family and find new hobbies. It is not only important to end the spread of COVID-19, we need to take care of our mental and emotional health, too.

The Country That Is Successful but Not Happy 이미지
The Country That Is Successful but Not Happy

  • The Country That Is Successful but Not HappyBy Lee woo-seongReporter, Junior of Mechanical EngineeringThe Republic of Korea in the 21st century is in a more prosperous, democratic, and peaceful state than ever before. Korea has grown from the world's poorest country in the 1950s to a level comparable to Europe and North America. However, South Korea ranked 54th in the Ranking of Happiness between 2016-2018. In addition, Korea always ranks at the bottom of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) in terms of indicators of happiness and quality of life. It is noteworthy that Korea ranked high in life expectancy (9th), per capita income (27th), and tolerance (40th), but did not receive good grades in social freedom (144th), corruption (100th), and social support (91th). Why is such a successful country so unhappy?Social StructureWhen researchers study societies, the labor indicator shows the causes of low corruption and social support scores. As of 2016, the proportion of workers in Korea receiving low wages (less than two-thirds of the median wage) in the labor market stood at 23.5 percent, the second worst among OECD countries, after the United States. The gender wage gap is the largest in the OECD and Korea also has the longest working hours in the OECD, except for Mexico. Additionally, the competition rate for college entrance exams is becoming more fierce. Whether they can access Daechi-dong, the center of private education, determines the success or failure of the college entrance exams. This social structure further intensifies the polarization of wealth. The farther away from the words "college graduate," "Seoul," "permanent employee," and "golden spoon," the more people live with the perception that life is a failure. There is a historical context for how our society has become like this. The pressures to have started at the poorest level in the 1950s and grow the economy faster than other countries have dominated Korean society for decades.Social Freedom and CorruptionKorea has a small proportion of violent crimes, such as assault and murder, but a high proportion of tax evasion and embezzlement. It means the public has a high subjective perception of corruption, which is why we are so sensitive to illegality and perks. Also, one of the biggest factors behind the low happiness index is that our freedom ranking is at the bottom, at 144th place. There is a widespread atmosphere in Korean society that people have to live according to the standards of others. What should we do?It is hard to live your own way and people have to be wary of others because of the collectivist culture in East Asia. Comparing ourselves and constantly being compared to others are the biggest factors that lower the level of happiness. Korea has a lot of social comparisons compared to other countries. Therefore, in order for us to be happy we should have an attitude of focusing on ourselves rather than comparing ourselves to others. Also, if there is a government effort to improve the quality of peoples lives by investing in social welfare, South Korea will be happier.

  • Still a Livable WorldStories About Hope and BeliefBy Jo Tae-yeon Cub Reporter, Junior of EconomicsMaking a concession was natural in the past, but now it is considered a choice. People think more of personal benefit than consideration for other people. Due to this, people say that the world is harsh. In the summer of 2015, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) caused a tremble in all parts of the country. It was a state of national crisis and people were scared. Now, all countries tremble because of the new virus, COVID-19. The first occurrence of the virus in China was in December of 2019, and it spread rapidly with the first suspected case in South Korea in January of 2020. The spread rate of COVID-19 in Korea is beyond imagination, with about 1,000 cases confirmed in a week. Because of this situation, peoples anxiety has increased and numerous events have been canceled. People became indifferent to neighbors and they avoided contact or spent time alone. Nevertheless, the desire to help people is still widely present around the world. This article features stories that show hope and belief despite the fact that were living in a harsh world.TheKukmin Daily shared subscribers stories that show hope and warmth through their Still a Livable World column. COVID-19 has put people in a critical situation but Still a Livable World is touching people by telling the stories of donations and consideration for others. The Kind LandlordMr. Lee was running a chicken restaurant in Seoul (Jung-gu) when he got a call from the landlord. The call began with a normal greeting. Then, the landlord told him he would lower the rent from 12 million won to 10 million won, reducing his burden by 2 million won. Recently, it had been difficult for Mr. Lee to maintain his livelihood. But, after the phone call from his landlord, he felt his heart lighten. The livelihoods of small business owners are at risk due to the spread of COVID-19. The virus caused not only a national health threat, but also an economic downturn. So, the landlord lowered rent for his tenant. Thankfully, this is not the only story of a kind landlord.Contribution and Letter from an Old WomanEunpyeong-gu Community Service Center in Seoul told the story of an old woman who made a contribution of 743,000 won that she had saved to overcome the COVID-19 damage. She wrote, Please use for COVID-19. It is not big money for a rich man, but for us who are not rich, its big money. Therefore, please use it for poor senior citizens and a doctor who strives for us. The woman saved money by cutting down meals to help others survive coronavirus infection damage. Public officers asked her for her name many times but she refused. This anonymous donation was a sacrifice she made to help her community. The Strange Sold-out Parades in DaeguFor a time, people stopped visiting restaurants in Daegu because of COVID-19. But, a piece of paper was attached to many restaurants entrances, and "sold out" was written on that paper. An orange seller in Daegu was thinking about how to deal with the 80 remaining boxes of oranges he had to sell. Because of the stay home orders, no one was out buying oranges, so he was going to have to throw them all away. After his story was uploaded on SNS, he sold all of them in 10 minutes with the help of Daegu citizens. This was not all. A seller who runs a meat restaurant sold everything he had in his refrigerator through SNS. This sold-out parade continued. People shared the situations of self-employed business owners through SNS. As a result, Daegu citizens living near the stores bought all remaining food, which allowed them to sell out of the ingredients piled up in their refrigerators.People who have heard Still a Livable World stories say that they feel they can overcome COVID-19 because they shared warm hearts. These days, many people are having a hard time financially. Nevertheless, a donation procession is going on. Not just celebrities, but also people who live basic lives, disabled couples, old couples, and young students have also made donations. They donated not only their money, but also their warm hearts. Despite the difficult situation, people were moved to take action for their community. These stories cant solve COVID-19, but the warm minds of people give hope and make us believe we can overcome fear of the virus.

I would recommend it to people who like to travel with their children.Q. Is there anything you want people to know before they experience this?A. If you usually get sick by bus, you'd better take car-sickness pills in advance. I wasn't sick, but another person on the bus was. Luckily, she brought pills and took them.Park Joo-haeng, a cultural & tourism commentatorQ. Who usually uses the city tour bus?A. A lot of people in their 40-50s come. The Daedeok Tour, which is held on Wednesday, is frequented by elementary school students.Q. Please recommend a course!A. For office workers and those who need a break, I recommend the 'Gyejok Mountain Tour' on Saturday afternoon or a 'Healing Tour' on Friday morning at the Injaesan Natural Recreation Forest. Visitors to Daejeon can use the City Tour for free by bringing in a receipt that shows you have paid to stay in a hotel in Daejeon during the 'Daejeon Visit Year' (2019-2021). Please note that an accommodation reservation document is not accepted and it must be a receipt!Q. Is there anything you need to be careful about when you participate?A. Please keep your time promise. On the tour, we stop at many places for a short time. It is important to return to the bus on time as this is a group tour. In particular, if we wait for you because you are late at one stop, everyone in the group may not be able to participate in the next program or enter the concert at the next stop. The Daejeon City Tour is a program that people of all ages can enjoy. As I have experienced it myself, it is attractive that I can go to places that are hard to reach by public transportation at an affordable price. Moreover, as I enjoyed sightseeing with the explanations of the culture & tourism commentator, it was more interesting and I gained knowledge about Daejeon. If you want to do something extraordinary in Daejeon, but don't have a private car, how about the City Tour Bus?

  • For the YouthBy Kim Ji-hun Reporter, Junior of English Language and LiteratureDaejeon, one of the five largest cities in the Republic of Korea, is often called "Nojam City" (having nothing fun city). Though it has convenient traffic access and geographical strengths from being located in the central part of the country, Daejeon has nothing to see or enjoy. Is that really true? Maybe we dont know enough about Daejeon. Daejeon has designated 2019 to 2021 as the Year of Daejeon Visit and it is holding various cultural events. Also, the city is carrying out more policies for young people, especially with the increasing number of the older generation. Cheongchun Village is an organization that is working for young people.Cheongchun Village is a nonprofit corporation in Daejeon City. Since 2017, young people working with the organization voluntarily plan cultural activities and establish various cultural networks between young artists, businessmen, and students to make Daejeon a city of youth culture. For example, they have hosted events at an outdoor rooftop theater, sponsored an event where young people share their hobbies and talents, offered a cooking class with a young chef, and held events where young people can communicate their dreams and concerns. In these diverse ways, the Village is trying to communicate with young people and make a connection between them. Lets look at the details.1. Worker NetworksSince 2019, Cheongchun Village has held events for young workers especially. They have offered classes where participants can make candles, tiramisu cake in a bottle, a diary, a wool felt bag, and so on. Through hosting these classes, the Village brings the participants meaningful results in a short time. In addition, through writing and presentations in the speech class, young participants are able to build confidence and form a communication network with each other.2. Hobby FestivalThe Hobby Festival is the program in which young people share their hobbies and talents. Though it was just started in 2018, it has already established itself as a very successful event of the Village in 2019.Young people can operate their own booths at the event. They can experience various activities, like making perfume, a herbarium, or a wish bracelet. Also, they can learn calligraphy, play a board game, or have a tarot card reading all in one place.3. Cheong-starzCheong-starz were the supporters of the Village. Young people who had an interest in planning cultural events were recruited. Cheong-starz contributed to the development of Daejeon youth culture by planning and participating in the events of the Village. These passionate supporters made their creative ideas come true for the youth through this opportunity. For example, they hosted the make-up program Beauty Days and the tea ceremony program Dado Nado.As you have seen so far, Cheongchun Village is trying to provide various opportunities for the young and striving for the cultural development of Daejeon City. They are still making more interesting events. Are you still bored in Daejeon? Why don't you try to take part in the Villages activities?Take part in the Villages activities.
