International Student ID Card

By Lee Hae-rin Cub Reporter, Sophomore of English Language and Literature

Do you know about International Student ID Cards? In principle, a student ID card does not have credibility abroad, but an international student ID card can be used as an identification card in all areas, certified by overseas certification institutions. In addition, an international student ID card brings various discounts and benefits to reduce expenses for students who visit foreign countries for the purpose of traveling or studying abroad.

Institutions that provide international student ID cards include ISIC (International Student Identity Card), and ISEC (International Student Exchange identity Card). In general, ISICs are widely used and can be recognized in more places. Therefore, students are relying more on ISICs than ISECs. Since their creation in 1953, ISIC cards have been used by more than 1 billion students around the world. In Korea, international student ID cards are issued annually to more than 180,000 students, and more than 150,000 student benefits are available for card users, worldwide.

  • How to Issue an International Student ID Card

The ISIC is issued to full-time students, aged 12 or older. ISIC is issued as a general identity card, but it also has functions that combine check cards and credit cards. Only students who are 14 or older can be issued with a student ID card that includes the check card functions. To get an international student ID card, first you need to fill in an online application form. If you are a student from an ISIC issue partnership school, then you can visit the school’s website, click on the international student ID card menu, and fill out an online application form. If you are not studying at a partnership university, you can fill in the online application form at isic.co.kr. (You can enter the online application form by scanning the QR below). In order to receive a student ID card, a certificate of enrollment, or leave of absence has to be issued by the university within the last month. After filling out the application form, you need to pay the international student ID card issuance fee. The ISIC issuance fee is 17,000 won for applications with a one-year validity period, and 34,000 won for applications with a two-year validity period. Finally, log into MY ID, select the card type and issuance method in the “Card Issuance” section, and apply.
