For Your Precious Future,

Safety Education in Laboratory

By Lee Seo-jin Reporter, Junior of Material Science and Engineering

HBNU provides safety education for 5,000 science research workers. This education is for professors, teaching assistants, research assistants, applicants, researchers, and university students. Also, it observes rules on the prevention of laboratory safety accidents, and the creation of laboratory safety environments.

Based on existing faculty and college students, high risk laboratory workers must receive 6 hours of safety education, and low risk laboratory workers must receive 3 hours of safety education. Newly hired faculty members are required to receive 8 hours for the high risk laboratory, and 4 hours for the low risk laboratory. Newcomers, such as freshmen or transfer students, are not distinguished by high or low risk ratings, so they receive 2 hours of education. Risk separation depends on the question; Do you handle hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, LMOs, radioactive isotopes including radiation devices, during your studies or classes?  If your answer is yes, you should have 6 hours of education. If your answer is no, you are in a low risk laboratory group. Therefore you only need to get 3 hours of education.

HBNU operates a separate site (safety.hanbat.ac.kr). On that site, you can select your language, type of research, and your risk group. After that, you can take a lecture by selecting the subjects. Finally, <Evaluation> should be implemented to confirm whether it has been completed properly. If your education is not completed, HBNU restricts access to all laboratories.

Although it is a legally essential education, the completion rate as of 2020 Regular Laboratory Safety Education for Research Activity Workers is low, at 75.8 percent (3,850/5,081). Also when asked if they really take safety education seriously, most students would say “no.” When we search “HBNU laboratory safety education” in the Google search box, the related search term is “How to skip Lab safety education.” If you do not complete safety education properly because of the lackadaisical thought that it is annoying, and that there would not be an accident, you will not have the potential to handle accidents in the future. It is called a Lack of safety awareness, when someone can not recognize or get used to the dangers of safety accidents, and is unaware of potential risks. Lack of safety awareness in the laboratory is very dangerous because it can lead to big accidents.

In February 2018, a graduate student, not wearing protective gear, was injured by broken glass fragments when an organic compound in a flask exploded during an experiment in the chemistry laboratory of KAIST. In addition in 2015, at Kangwon National University, two people were burned, due to abnormal reactions during waste fluid treatment in reagent bottles with damaged labels. Both of these two cases occurred because they did not comply with the basic safety rules. There are not only temporary accidents, but there are also long term accidents caused by not wearing safety equipment. Exposure to harmful chemicals can lead to physical injuries, such as adult leukemia.

Every year, about a thousand people die on industrial sites. Unlike games, we don’t have <saves> or <rods> in our lives. The slightest mistake can lead us to lose precious people, as well as all our precious hopes and dreams.

Everyone, please always pay attention to safety and health. No matter how great the research is that we have done, we don’t give the Nobel Prize to the dead.

We must be aware of the risk of laboratory safety accidents, aware of the basic safety rules of the laboratory, and wear tools such as safety guards. Cherish your future by ensuring your safety in the laboratory.
